The Family Literacy Project

The Family Literacy Project, or “FLiP” for short, is the most time and cost-effective way to help struggling young readers achieve reading proficiency.

How it Works

The FLiP Program is simple.

Our 12-week program is not tied to an academic calendar, so FLiP can be started at any time. Students and parents commit to using the program for 90 minutes per week – that’s only 1-2 songs per day! Regular check-ins with FLiP Coaches ensure that progress is being made, and kids become hooked on the singing game, all the while practicing essential reading skills. As a result… kids build confidence, feel successful, and see a brighter future.

Students sing to read! They improve their sing-on-pitch scores and rack up gold, silver or bronze stars. Kids listen and follow the words three times, then read the lyrics as they sing the lesson five times.  It’s so fun, kids often don’t want to stop!

Valuable Lessons

FLiP helps students with more than just improving their literacy.

Giving young readers a tablet helps them learn the importance of taking care and keeping track of their belongings. The weekly requirement of the program teaches the importance of having a routine, responsibility and accountability.

Backed by Research

FLiP is evidence based. It really works!

Cost Effective

10 Kids to 1

Our FLiP home tablet program helps 10 struggling readers each gain 1 full year in reading level for what it costs on average to do 1:1 tutoring for just one child. And, the FLiP program accomplishes this in half the time of tutoring.

Rapid Gains

1+ Years' Gain in 3 Months

When the sing-to-read software is used with fidelity (for 30 minutes, three times a week), kids’ reading levels rise 1+ years in just 3 months.

Sustained Growth

3 On + 5 Off = 1.6 Years

Study of kids using the sing-to-read software for 3 months measured 1.2 years gained, then discontinued use for their spring semester. They were tested again after those 5 months off to find an additional gain of almost another 1/2 year.

Evidence-Based

The FLiP Program is based on robust and rigorous research conducted by the University of South Florida and confirmed by a recent study “Evidence of Efficacy,” from Kent State University. In addition, SOAR uses numerous outcome measurements to ensure and confirm that reading improvement results are measurable and sustainable.

  • Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) scores

  • Oral Reading Fluency (ORF) scores

  • FSA (reading) reports

  • Running Records

  • Internal levels completed and other data captured within the FLiP system
